Interislander Ferry Experiences Rough Seas: Vehicle Damage and Minor Injuries Reported
Several vehicles were damaged and one passenger suffered a minor injury aboard the Interislander ferry Kaitaki during a voyage from Wellington to Picton, New Zealand. The incident occurred on December 27, 2024, shortly after the vessel departed Wellington Harbour at 8:45 AM NZ time.
As the ferry approached Karori Lighthouse, it encountered significant rolling, which caused passenger vehicles to shift and sustain damage. Upon arrival in Picton, affected passengers were being assisted, and a thorough assessment of the situation was conducted. The injured individual received prompt medical attention from the ferry’s crew.
In response to the rough weather conditions, which included heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds impacting central New Zealand, Interislander provided guidance to passengers regarding seasickness management on other sailings. Furthermore, service updates revealed the cancellation of the 6:15 AM sailing from Picton to Wellington and the 11:00 AM return voyage due to the adverse sea conditions.
