Cruise Ship Nightmare: Passengers Share Their ‘Worst Experience of Their Lives’

In February 2013, what was meant to be the trip of a lifetime for 4,200 passengers on the Carnival Triumph quickly turned into a nightmare. Devin Marble had just proposed to his childhood sweetheart, anticipating a romantic getaway as the ship set sail from Galveston, Texas, heading to Cozumel, Mexico.

However, disaster struck when an engine room fire left the cruise liner stranded in the Gulf of Mexico for five agonizing days. Passengers endured extreme discomfort as the ship lost power, leaving them without lights, air conditioning, refrigeration, and, most critically, working toilets. Many were forced to use showers as toilets and defecate in red plastic bags while makeshift tents were erected on the deck to provide some form of shelter.

The situation deteriorated rapidly, leading to the ship being dubbed the ‘Poop Cruise’ as the stench of sewage permeated the cabins and corridors. Devin described the unbearable smell, likening it to a summer portable toilet without any ventilation. As panic grew among passengers, some resorted to crafting help signs while others hoarded food in preparation for an indefinite wait.

A few days into their plight, desperate passengers managed to secure Wi-Fi from a passing ship to inform their loved ones of the dire situation, sparking widespread concern for those aboard. Onboard resources dwindled, and the anxiety amongst passengers escalated.

Eventually, after five days at sea, the Carnival Triumph was towed to a port in Mobile, Alabama, far from its original destination. Upon disembarking, the emotional relief was palpable. Some passengers were so overjoyed that they kissed the ground, while McDonald’s welcomed them with free meals—a stark contrast to their recent experience.

In the aftermath of the incident, Carnival Cruise Lines emphasized the lessons learned, stating that significant investments were made in fire prevention and safety protocols across their fleet. They reported that since the tragedy, over 53 million guests have enjoyed safe vacations with the company. The chaotic ordeal was recently revisited in a Netflix documentary titled ‘Trainwreck: Poop Cruise,’ which chronicles the harrowing events that took place aboard the ill-fated vessel.
